The focus of www.DepressionPlace.com is dysthymia and major depression, but there are other types of depression. The links below will help you start your search. First, here are some brief descriptions of the various types of depression other than major (clinical) depression and dysthymic disorder.

Any kind of depression should be assessed by a medical professional. There are treatments for all types of depression.

Bipolar Depression

Bipolar disorder used to be called manic depression or manic depressive disorder. It is characterized by cycling moods of depression and mania (extreme elation, high excitability).

Postpartum Depression

Postpartum depression is the depression that occurs after a woman gives birth. It is often called "The Baby Blues." However, it is a serious form of depression and needs to be treated accordingly. If you've recently had a baby and you're feeling depressed, talk with your doctor.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.)

Some people are depressed each year during the winter months because of the reduced number of daylight hours in each day. If you find that your depression begins in mid to late October and begins to lift in March, you may have S.A.D. One of the best treatments for this is full-spectrum light therapy.
